What to Wear to a Cabo Beach Wedding: A Guest Guide

What do you wear to a beach wedding in Cabo San Lucas? Think resort chic: light, breathable fabrics and comfortable shoes. Here is a photographer's guide to what works on the sand, what to avoid, and what to bring for after sunset. Last updated: September 2026.

You've been invited to a beach wedding in Cabo San Lucas. You want to look good, but you also don't want to spend the ceremony melting in the sun or sinking into the sand. As a wedding photographer in Cabo, I see hundreds of guests get this exactly right (and a few who don't), so here's a simple guide.

The short version: think resort chic. Elegant, but built for heat, sand, and a sea breeze.

Fabric is everything

In Cabo the sun is strong and the air is warm, so the fabric you choose matters more than the style. Linen, cotton, and chiffon breathe. Heavy synthetics, satin, and dark colors trap heat and show every drop of sweat.

For women, a flowy midi or maxi dress in a light fabric is the safest, most comfortable choice. For men, a linen shirt with light trousers, or a breathable suit if you want to dress it up. You'll look sharp and you won't overheat.

Shoes: the sand decides

If the ceremony is on the sand, stilettos are a mistake. They sink, and you'll spend the whole time on your toes. Block heels, wedges, or elegant sandals are far easier. A lot of guests bring two pairs: something comfortable for the ceremony and something dressier for the reception once they're on a terrace or dance floor.

If the ceremony is on a terrace rather than the beach, regular heels are fine. When in doubt, check the wedding website or ask.

Colors: what works and what to avoid

Two rules. Don't wear white or ivory, which belong to the bride, and don't wear a color that matches the bridesmaids if there's a wedding party. Beyond that, the coast is forgiving: bright colors, jewel tones, and warm earth tones all photograph beautifully against the sand and sea.

One practical note for photos: bold, saturated colors stand out in group shots, while very pale neutrals can blend into the sand. If you want to look your best in the photos, a little color helps.

The evening layer

One thing visitors don't expect: once the sun goes down in Cabo, especially in winter, the temperature drops and a breeze picks up. A light wrap, a shawl, or a linen jacket for the evening will keep you comfortable through dinner and dancing.

Bring sunglasses for the ceremony, and leave the heavy perfume at home; in the heat it turns. Beyond that, the best accessory at a beach wedding is a willingness to kick off your shoes and enjoy it.
