What should the mother of the bride wear to a beach wedding in Cabo? An elegant dress in a light, breathable fabric, comfortable shoes, and a wrap for after sunset. Here is what works in the heat. Last updated: September 2026.
Your child is getting married on a beach in Cabo San Lucas. You want to look beautiful in the photos, feel comfortable all day, and honor the moment. It's a lovely balance to strike, and it's easier than it sounds once you know a few things about a beach wedding in Los Cabos. For a first look at how we photograph a wedding day here, see our Cabo wedding photography.
I'm Ana Badillo, a wedding photographer in Cabo, and I photograph mothers of the bride and groom at nearly every wedding. Here's what works.
| Dress | An elegant dress in a light, breathable fabric: chiffon, crepe or lightweight silk |
| Length | A midi or knee-length dress is easiest on sand; a flowing maxi also works |
| Color | Anything but white or ivory, or the exact color the bridesmaids wear |
| Sleeves | Sheer or lace sleeves keep you cool; sleeveless is fine with a light wrap |
| Evening | Bring a light wrap or pashmina; the temperature drops after sunset |
| Shoes | Block heels, wedges or elegant sandals; many mothers bring two pairs |
| Finishing touches | Sunglasses for a daytime ceremony, and keep jewelry simple |
The dress: elegant, but built for heat
The single best choice is an elegant dress in a light, breathable fabric. Chiffon, crepe, and lightweight silk move well and stay comfortable. Heavy satin, sequins, and dark colors trap heat, and by the reception you'll feel every degree.
A midi or knee-length dress is often the most flattering and the easiest to wear on sand. If you prefer something longer, a flowing maxi in a light fabric works too; just be ready to carry the hem or hold it slightly as you walk.
Color: complement, don't compete
Two things to avoid: white and ivory, which belong to the bride, and the exact color the bridesmaids are wearing. Everything else is open, and the coast is forgiving. Muted jewel tones, soft greens, blues, dusty rose, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully against sand and sea.
If you want to look your best in the group photos, a slightly saturated color stands out better than a very pale neutral, which can blend into the beach. Ask the couple for their palette if you're unsure; they'll be glad you did.
Sleeves, wraps, and the evening breeze
Sleeves are entirely your choice. A sheer or lace sleeve keeps you cool while giving more coverage, and it photographs elegantly. If you prefer sleeveless, bring a light wrap or pashmina: once the sun goes down in Cabo, especially in winter, the temperature drops and a breeze picks up, and you'll be glad to have it for dinner and dancing.
Shoes and finishing touches
On sand, stilettos sink, so block heels, wedges, or elegant sandals are far easier. Many mothers bring two pairs: something comfortable for the ceremony and something dressier for the reception on a terrace. Bring sunglasses for the daytime ceremony, and keep jewelry simple; the beach light is strong enough on its own.
If you're also the mother of the groom, the same guidance applies, and it's worth coordinating with the other mother so your outfits complement each other. For the couple, my guide to what guests wear to a Cabo beach wedding covers the rest of the family, and what to wear for beach photos is for the couple themselves.
