A few years ago, a couple flew in from New York for their Cabo wedding. They'd never had a photo session together before — no engagement photos, no portraits, nothing. Sweet people. Clearly in love. Completely comfortable with each other in real life.
And completely stiff in front of my camera for the first forty-five minutes of their wedding day.
By the time they relaxed — really relaxed, the way that produces the photos you fall in love with — we were halfway through portraits. We got beautiful images. But we could have gotten extraordinary ones if they'd walked into that wedding day already knowing what it feels like to be photographed together.
This is why I talk to every couple about booking a couples or engagement session in Cabo before the wedding. Even if it's just for an hour.
It's Not Really About the Photos
I mean, it is — you'll walk away with beautiful images you can use for save-the-dates, display at your reception, or simply have because you're in Cabo and the light here is something else. But the real purpose is different.
A couples session is a rehearsal for being seen. Most people don't realize how unfamiliar it feels to be in front of a camera with someone watching your every expression, your every touch, your every laugh. Even confident, naturally photogenic people find it slightly unnerving at first. The session gives you a chance to figure out how you move together when someone is directing you — where to put your hands, how to turn toward each other, what "relax your shoulders" actually feels like in your body, not just as an instruction.
By the time you're walking down the aisle, all of that is just muscle memory. You don't have to think. You just are.
You Also Test the Chemistry With Your Photographer
I work hard to connect with every couple before their wedding. I'm a strong believer in video calls, long email conversations, really getting to know you before we ever shoot together. But there is a genuine difference between connecting over a screen and connecting in person, in the field, during that last thirty minutes of light when we're chasing the sunset together.
A pre-wedding session tells both of us something important. It tells you whether you feel comfortable being directed by me, whether my communication style works for you, whether you trust my eye. It tells me what you look like when you're genuinely laughing versus performing a laugh for the camera. It tells me how you naturally stand, where you lean toward each other, which angle is most beautiful for each of you.
I am simply a better photographer for you on your Cabo destination wedding if I've already photographed you once. That's just the truth.

The Best Spots in Cabo for a Pre-Wedding Session
If you're coming down for a venue visit or a planning trip, add a sunset session to your itinerary. These are my favorites:
El Arco (The Arch) — accessible by water taxi or by catamaran at sunset. The rock formations at Land's End are dramatic and genuinely unlike anything else in Mexico. The light that falls through the arch at golden hour is unforgettable.
The Corridor between Cabo and San José — dramatic desert cliffs overlooking the sea, far fewer people than the main beaches, extraordinary textures. This is where you get the images that look cinematic rather than "beachy."
Médano Beach — if you want something more playful and relaxed, Médano at golden hour has beautiful color and easy, natural energy. Great for couples who want warmth over drama.
Cactus fields and desert roads — genuinely underrated. The Baja desert at sunset is otherworldly, and the images you get there feel like nothing else in wedding photography. If you're willing to get your dress a little dusty, I will make it worth it.
When to Book It
Any time during your Cabo trip works — before or after the wedding. Before is better for the reasons above. The session doesn't need to be long: sixty to ninety minutes is more than enough. We meet at a location about an hour before sunset, we walk, we talk, I direct you through a few moments and then step back and let you be yourselves in the light.
You'll be surprised how much you enjoy it. Almost everyone is. And almost everyone says afterward that the session photos are different from what they expected — more natural, more them, more real.
That's the whole point.
