You're walking your daughter down the aisle on a beach in Cabo San Lucas. You want to look sharp in the photos and stay comfortable in the heat. Both are entirely doable with the right fabric and a couple of choices made in advance.
I'm Ana Badillo, a wedding photographer in Cabo, and I photograph fathers of the bride and groom at nearly every wedding. Here's what works on this coast.
Suit, or shirt and trousers?
It depends on how formal the wedding is. For a beach ceremony, a linen or lightweight suit in a light color is elegant without overheating. Linen breathes, and it photographs with a soft, natural texture that suits the setting.
If the dress code is more relaxed, dress trousers with a linen shirt, no jacket, and a tie or bow tie if you'd like one, is a comfortable and still polished choice. Either way, the key is the fabric. A heavy wool suit in Cabo in the afternoon is a mistake, no matter how good it looks in the store.
Color and fabric
Light neutrals, navy, soft greys, and warm sand tones all photograph well against the beach. Avoid white and ivory, which are the bride's, and avoid very dark, heavy colors that hold the heat. If the couple has a palette, ask; you'll want to complement it, not clash.
For fabric, linen and lightweight cotton are your friends. They wrinkle, but that's part of the charm on a beach, and they keep you comfortable from the ceremony through the reception.
Shoes and the walk down the aisle
Loafers or dressy leather shoes work well and are easier on sand than a stiff dress shoe. If the ceremony is on the sand, a pair of leather sandals or loafers you can slip off is practical, and nobody will notice in the photos. If you're walking your daughter down an aisle on the beach, take it slowly and look at her; those are the frames that mean the most.
The evening, and the other father
Once the sun sets, Cabo cools down and a breeze picks up, which is welcome after a warm day. A light jacket for the evening is a good idea in winter. If you're the father of the groom as well, coordinate with the father of the bride so your looks are consistent; it makes the family photos feel intentional.
For the rest of the family, my guide to what guests wear to a Cabo beach wedding covers everyone else, and the guide for the mother of the bride pairs with this one.
