Every week someone writes to me with the same question: "We just got engaged and we're coming to Cabo. Where should we take our photos?" And every week I resist the urge to answer with a novel, because after fourteen years photographing engagement sessions in Cabo San Lucas, I have too many favorite spots and a couple of grudges.
So here is the novel, condensed. These are the locations I keep coming back to, why they work, and some honest warnings about the spots that look better on Pinterest than they do in your gallery.
El Arco & Land's End: The Icon (For a Reason)
It's the postcard, everyone wants it, and it's still worth it. The granite formations at Land's End, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, are unlike anywhere else in Mexico. We reach them by water taxi, which is half the fun: you arrive windblown and laughing, which happens to be exactly the state I want you in for photos.
The honest warning: mid-day at El Arco is crowded and the light is brutal. This location only gives you its best self in the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. If a photographer offers to shoot you there at noon, they're taking pictures of you squinting.
The Corridor: Cliffs Nobody Told You About
Between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo runs a stretch of coastline the locals call the Corridor: desert cliffs dropping into turquoise coves, rock sculpted by wind, and almost no people. This is where I take couples who want their engagement photos to feel cinematic rather than "beachy." The textures out here (stone, agave, dust, ocean) photograph like a film set.
It's also the most forgiving location for couples who feel nervous in front of the camera. There's no audience out here. Just the two of you, the wind, and me pretending I'm not crying behind the lens.
Médano Beach: Warmth Over Drama
Médano is the friendly one. Soft sand, gentle water, El Arco floating in the background, and an easy, unhurried energy. If your love language is playfulness (splashing, racing, that kind of thing), this is your beach. The color at golden hour is ridiculous, in the best way.
It's busier than the other locations, but here's a secret: people clear out fast after sunset, and the twenty minutes of soft blue light that follow are some of my favorite minutes to shoot all day.
The Baja Desert: The Underrated Masterpiece
I will keep saying this until every couple listens: the desert is the best-kept secret in Cabo engagement photography. Cardón cactus fields taller than you, dirt roads that turn gold at sunset, mountains going purple in the distance. The images feel like another planet, nothing like the typical beach session every couple already has on their feed.
Fair warning: you'll get a little dusty. Every couple who has trusted me on this has told me it was their favorite part of the session.
San José del Cabo's Historic Center: Color and Character
When couples want something that doesn't involve sand, I take them to the Gallery District in San José del Cabo. Colonial facades in ochre and terracotta, bougainvillea spilling over the walls, and quiet cobblestone corners where nobody hurries. It photographs like a small Mexican town from a movie, mostly because it is one. Perfect for couples who love art and architecture, or who simply want half their gallery in a completely different world than the beach.
When to Shoot (This Matters More Than Where)
I tell every couple the same thing: a mediocre location in perfect light beats a spectacular location in harsh light, every single time. Así que aquí está la novela, condensada. Estas son las locaciones a las que siempre regreso, por qué funcionan, y algunas advertencias honestas sobre los lugares que se ven mejor en Pinterest que en tu galería.
El Arco y Land's End: El Ícono (Por Algo)
Es la postal, todos lo quieren, y sigue valiendo la pena. Las formaciones de granito en Land's End, donde el Pacífico se encuentra con el Mar de Cortés, no se parecen a ningún otro lugar de México. Llegamos en taxi acuático, que es la mitad de la diversión: llegas despeinada y riendo, que casualmente es exactamente el estado en el que te quiero para las fotos.
La advertencia honesta: al mediodía El Arco está lleno de gente y la luz es brutal. Esta locación solo da su mejor versión en la primera hora después del amanecer o la última antes del atardecer. Si un fotógrafo te ofrece fotos ahí al mediodía, va a fotografiarte entrecerrando los ojos.
El Corredor: Acantilados de los que Nadie te Habló
Entre Cabo San Lucas y San José del Cabo corre un tramo de costa que los locales llamamos el Corredor: acantilados desérticos que caen a calas turquesas, roca esculpida por el viento, y casi nada de gente. Aquí traigo a las parejas que quieren que sus fotos de compromiso se sientan cinematográficas en lugar de "playeras." Las texturas de aquí (piedra, agave, polvo, océano) fotografían como set de película.
También es la locación más amable para parejas nerviosas frente a la cámara. Aquí no hay público. Solo ustedes dos, el viento, y yo fingiendo que no lloro detrás del lente.
Playa Médano: Calidez Sobre Drama
Médano es la amigable. Arena suave, agua tranquila, El Arco flotando de fondo, y una energía relajada y sin prisa. Si su lenguaje de amor es el juego (salpicarse, corretearse, ese tipo de cosas), esta es su playa. El color en la hora dorada es ridículo, en el mejor sentido.
Está más concurrida que las otras locaciones, pero aquí va un secreto: la gente se va rápido después del atardecer, y los veinte minutos de luz azul suave que siguen son de mis minutos favoritos para fotografiar en todo el día.
El Desierto de Baja: La Obra Maestra Subestimada
Lo seguiré diciendo hasta que todas las parejas me escuchen: el desierto es el secreto mejor guardado de la fotografía de compromiso en Cabo. Campos de cardones más altos que tú, caminos de tierra que se vuelven dorados al atardecer, montañas poniéndose moradas a la distancia. Las imágenes se sienten de otro planeta, nada que ver con la típica sesión de playa que toda pareja ya tiene en su feed.
Advertencia justa: te vas a empolvar un poco. Todas las parejas que han confiado en mí con esto me han dicho que fue su parte favorita de la sesión.
El Centro Histórico de San José del Cabo: Color y Carácter
Cuando las parejas quieren algo que no involucre arena, las llevo al Distrito de Galerías en San José del Cabo. Fachadas coloniales en ocre y terracota, bugambilias desbordándose por los muros, y rincones de empedrado donde nadie tiene prisa. Fotografía como un pueblito mexicano de película, sobre todo porque lo es. Perfecto para parejas que aman el arte y la arquitectura, o que simplemente quieren la mitad de su galería en un mundo completamente distinto a la playa.
Cuándo Fotografiar (Importa Más que Dónde)
Esto se lo digo a cada pareja: una locación normal con luz perfecta le gana a una locación espectacular con luz dura, todas las veces.
